#FitFaithFriday with Annie Miller

My Interview with Annie Miller

Fit & Faithful Annie

Annie Miller is a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist, cheer coach, wife, and woman of Faith.  Her life is a representation of the beauty of strength unleashed.   She has a warrior soul and I'm so glad to know her through this #FitFaithMovement!

Me: Tell us a little bit more about what you do and how you came to start it?

Annie: The main business I am currently working to grow is my online fitness programming site FITDESIGNBYANNIE. I have different workout programs at different levels available for women above the age of 18. When I say “level,” I mean both fitness level and commitment level.

When I graduated college I had my exercise and sports science degree and had interned as a strength and conditioning at University of Portland for two years. It was my internship project to write a 16 week program for all incoming freshmen. I came to LOVE writing programs. This was my niche and I knew it.

With absolutely no business training, I said shoot, I have this gift, I am pretty darn good at it, no one I know is doing it. LET’S DO THIS!

I started Fitdesignbyannie in January of 2015. I saw a need of people who went to the gym and got a workout in, but weren’t getting the results they wanted. I knew I had the love, experience and ability to write these people programs that could produce results, empowerment and education. That is my why.

Me: How do you think your Fitness impacts your Faith and your Faith impacts your Fitness?

Annie: OH muh-goodness girlfriend. DISCIPLINE, PATIENCE, VULNERABILITY, COMMITMENT, SACRIFICE, MOTIVATION, SELF WORTH, SELF BELIEF, INSECURITIES, STRENGTH. It’s all related.  Your self-worth can’t come from the weights or your physical appearance, it has to be rooted in your true created IDENTITY. Gratitude is a huge one for me. To remain grateful for my blessings. That drives my workouts. I think, "I can be strong, so why would I not be?" I think Faith is the driving force for fitness, but fitness provides tools for faith.

Toremaingratefulformyblessings.Thatdrivesmyworkouts.Ithink-IcanbestrongsowhywouldInotbe--IthinkFaithisthedrivingforceforfitnessbutfitnessprovidestoolsforfaith.

MeWhat is the number one thing that you see women struggling with today?  How do you think Health/Fitness &/or Faith can help her in that struggle?

Annie: Self-worth. Body-image has been around forever, but the lack of self-worth BREAKS my heart. Taking care of themselves. If they get up and go to the gym enough times, they will start believing they are worth it. The feeling of strength does something to women. It empowers them.

Your self-worth can’t come from the weights or your physical appearance, it has to be rooted in your true created IDENTITY.

Me: What is the biggest lesson you've learned recently?

Annie: Be realistic with your priorities. Be real with yourself and your expectations of yourself. There is a lot of freedom in being real with yourself.  For me, between a business, a husband, getting my lifts in and coaching, I have to find a balance and accept it. If your goals don’t align with your life state, change the goal, or change your life.

Me:  What dreams do you have for this year and for the future? What role do you expect God to play in developing these into realities?

Annie: I am already amazed at what God has allowed my business to become. NEVER did I think in college that I would run an online business writing personalized fitness programs and hosting 20 day challenges.  But here I am. By the grace of God. Literally. My hope by Jan 2017 is to launch a newsletter which will lead people to my blog posts. The newsletter is my education for sure, but that’s my heart. Again, like my website, my writing is real and authentic. I have to be right with my relationship with God or people can totally feel the difference. He is working with me currently on patience and thankfulness. If God doesn’t want me to do something, He will shut the door.

ME: I am doing a series on "Fruitful Health" where we are talking about how to grow the fruits of the Spirit in your health.  We are talking JOY.  How do you find a way to ENJOY taking care of your health?

Annie: Honestly I have pretty bomb genetics and years of training under my belt, so I can make changes in a pretty timely manner. I also know to be patient and trust the process. It’s a PROCESS.

I also teach and say in emails to my clients, have grace for yourself. This kind of pairs with patience. I practice this in my own training. It’s not an overnight process. ESPECIALLY for women! Hello hormones! I have reached goals over the years and each time it came from being steadfast and consistent. Once you reach one, it’s on to the next. I think you get more patient with each one.

The 3 Strageties That Helped Me Make More Time for God and My Health

3 Top Notch Scheduling Practices:

Complete this sentence:  “If I just had _____________ I could live the healthy, faithful life I aspire to live.”

Well, if you’re like any of the 80% of the women who I interviewed and surveyed this question to, your answer is something to the effect of more time.”

TIME MANAGEMENT.

This year, I am busier than I have ever been.  So I have been incredibly intentional on building the SKILL of my activity (a.k.a time) management so I could be productive in my business, mindful to my relationships, and dutiful to my health.

Managing your activity is one of the best skills you can invest in developing for yourself that will have a PROFOUND impact on the likelihood of success in your health and relationship with God.

So these 3 strategies DRAMATICALLY helped me manage my busy schedule much better so I could still make time for my Faith, health and fitness goals.

 #1.  The 5 Category System:

My days were wildly overwhelmed until my  “She Works His Way” mentorship happened.  In this 1-month mentorship with coach Michelle Myers, she introduced the 5 Category system to me which took my scheduling to another level.

Now I only focus on those activities that fit into my chosen Categories of greatest VALUE in my life AND the deal is, in each category, I can only have 3-5 ACTIVITIES that I devote myself to.

That’s IT.

The reason there are only 3-5 activities is because that is the number of things you can do for each category WELL.  Any more than 5 would cut into the quality and commitment to the others and ability to complete certain tasks any respectable amount of time.

Screenshot 2016-08-12 15.35.42

So, my most important category (which I think you should have too) is my GROWTH Category.    In this category are the following activities:

  1. Time with God.
  2. Rest/Downtime
  3. Learning and Developing Skill #1 (like my certifications/biz development)
  4. Learning and Developing Skill #2 (a particular study or course I want to take).
  5. Learning and Developing Skill # 3 (work with a coach)

Another important category is HEALTH and SELF CARE:

  1. Exercise
  2. Mobility/Alignment
  3. Meal Planning
  4. Hair, Nails, Etc appt.
  5. Reading for Fun/TV/Movies

One difficult one is the PROVISION/WORK Category.  For me it looks like

  1. Coaching Calls
  2. Writing/Blogging
  3. Social Media Presence
  4. Program Design or Launch #1
  5. Program Design or Launch #2
Other categories you might have are things like:  Family/Friends,  Service/Volunteer, Leadership/Mentorship, Hobbies/Activities  etc.  All of these should be categories that are UNIQUE to your personality and calling.

So, you can see that there isn’t isn’t a whole lot of room to get too crazy on the number of people/things in each category.   It forces you to make some decisions on WHAT’S MOST IMPORTANT TO YOU (i.e. what God is calling you to do)  and focus on doing those things WELL TO COMPLETION.

The key is to then give yourself permission to DELEGATE anything that doesn’t fit into the category to someone else to handle it (cleaning your house, certain parts of your job, hiring a assistant etc) OR simply put off a project until you finish another one, knowing there is plenty of time for you to accomplish that when you have some space free.

#2.  TIME BLOCKING + BREAKS:

Once I had my PRIORITIES configured, I then IMPLEMENTED them into my daily schedule by using a system I was already accustomed to —> TIME BLOCKING

Hopefully, you know by now that MULTITASKING doesn’t work (see study by Dr. Caroline Leaf HERE).  So for productivity, focusing on a single task in a BLOCK OF TIME is one of the best ways to break up your daily schedule.

The book, “The Power of Full Engagement” shows that most productive people who excelled at their jobs, were those that would work FULLY ENGAGED for 90-Min BLOCKS of time and then give themselves a 15-min break before going back at it.

The amount of time was significant because it was just enough to get intensely productive but just shy of getting fatigued.

The second part, the BREAK is also incredibly powerful.  It’s just enough time to get in a quick walk, do some mobility or stretches, or to eat (yes, I’m a fast eater).

The BREAK is so powerful because it allows enough recovery time to then be able to get back into the zone with the next Time Block and be more productive that way.

Screenshot 2016-08-12 15.02.33

#3.  INVEST WISELY NOW TO SAVE TIME LATER:

One of the BEST lessons I’ve learned (the hard way no less) as an entrepreneur is how VALUABLE it has been to invest in quality coaches and mentors who know what they are doing so I don’t have to try to waste time trying to figure it out on my own.

It has been a significant amount of money, but money that has been WELL SPENT because I have been able to save myself from the FRUSTRATION of trying to go it alone.

This is exactly why I would LOVE for you to join me in my FREE 4-Week “A. Wright Fit Reset” program this Fall.  I know for a fact that investing your time in a program I have METICULOUSLY developed for ALL AREAS OF HEALTH (Nutrition, Fitness, Mindset, & Spirit) will be an investment of your time that is well worth it because it will SAVE YOU TIME (and maybe even money!) IN THE END!

I hold no fear in openly sharing with you just how much I LOVE working HARD on learning and passionately pursuing Fitness & Faith so I can be and ELITE COACH who truly helps and impacts her clients lives.

I have taken extensive and expensive measures to be very well versed and intentionally BALANCED in knowledge and acumen to address ALL areas of your health, not just a couple.

It’s why I decided to level-up my certification this year to become a CSCS through the NSCA and am currently studying for my second Nutrition certification through Precision Nutrition because I wanted to be sure I chose ELITE institutes that were well known to make ELITE coaches.  The greater the challenge they are for me (which they ARE!) the more I know it will help truly my clients!

In the same light, this is also why my number ONE resource for ALL things in life is the Bible and Biblical teachings and sermons.  I have learned MORE in this one year of reading the entire Bible and studying God’s word than in the previous 3 decades of my life.  My coaching would be nothing but foolish, worldly opinion if I didn’t take the time to invest my time in THE resource of pure Truth.   It is the greatest gift I have given myself and those I love and coach.

I used to think speaking of such things of myself was like bragging, but now I know it’s a gift to you that I share this LIGHT of passion I wholeheartedly pursue.  Always remember, when we are called to "let our light shine before others so they may see our good deeds and glorify our Father in Heaven." (Matt 5:16)  When you let your light of life shine, you automatically give permission for others to do the same.

Making time for your FITNESS and FAITH  is a LIGHT FOR YOU TO SHINE for those you love the most!

The world deserves to see you functioning at you best and proudly shining it for all to see!

Join me in the “A. Wright Fit Reset” to engage in flexing those Physical and Spiritual muscles!    Program starts August 15!

#FitFaithFriday Divas In Transition

My Interview with Patricia

Fit Faith Friday General (1)

Me: Tell us a little bit more about what you do and how you came to start it?

Patricia: I am a health and transformation consultant. I help women become the “Diva” they were meant to be by providing them with the tools and resources they need to transform their mind, body, and spirit.

Divas In Transition came from the belief that every woman is a diva. A diva is defined as a woman who knows what she wants and makes changes to accomplish her goals. We are “divas” who are pursuit of making changes to better ourselves – whether these changes involve our career, education or health etc

Me: How do you think your Fitness impacts your Faith and your Faith impacts your Fitness?

Patricia: I believe fitness impacts my faith because it pushes me to keep going. There were times where I participated in fitness challenges and thought I wouldn’t make it. These fitness challenges gave me the courage to keep going and have faith that I will complete what I started.

In the same sense, I believe my faith also impacts my fitness. Faith is what drives me to challenge myself physically and mentally.  “Faith without works is dead “. We have to take steps to reap the fruit of our labor.

MeWhat is the number one thing that you see women struggling with today?  How do you think Health/Fitness &/or Faith can help her in that struggle?

Patricia: I see so many women struggle with their mindset. They believe they can’t reach their goals because they failed more than once or they quit right before their breakthrough. They have a mindset of “ I can’t “ instead of “How can I?"

Me: What is the biggest lesson you've learned recently?

Patricia: The biggest lesson I learned recently is not to quit. God isn’t blind to our hard work and effort. In due time, we will be rewarded if we don’t give up. When we are close to the finish line, the pressure to quit becomes intense. However, remember the finish line is right around the corner.

Me: I am doing a series on "Fruitful Health" where we are talking about how to grow the fruits of the Spirit in your health.  We are talking PEACE.  How do you find PEACE with your body and taking care of your health?

Patricia: Yes, I have made peace with my body. I have one body, and my goal is to care for it the best way I can. I don’t compare myself to anyone because I was designed uniquely. My body was created for me. I see too many women comparing themselves to other women. Remember comparison is the thief of joy.

ME: Is there anything you have coming up that we can join you in?

Patricia: Certainly! I created the Diva’s Guide to Getting Fit Kit – a must have kit for divas who are looking to transform their mind and body
It consists of 1) Diva’s Guide to Getting Fit & Healthy E-book 2) Diva’s Food Journal and 3) Diva’s Guide to Getting Fit & Healthy Workbook.  You can download that HERE.

Navigating Anxiety & Depression with Holly Mutlu

Pastor and Life Coach Holly Mutlu

Fit Faith Friday Holly Mutlu

#FitFaithFriday: [Video Interview] Holly Mutlu

Holly is going to be someone that you might wanna get used to seeing with me. I just adore her and this conversation/interview we did was very insightful and SO HELPFUL!

She is a Pastor and Counselor and specializes in helping women who battle with anxiety and depression. As someone that struggled with depression in high school and college, I think there is a significant need to address this issue with women, especially because these ailments may be the root causes of many of the health and physical ailments you are seeing. Medical Marijuana may be prescribed to you if you relate to this, but you need to make sure you visit https://www.marijuanaseo.com/marijuana-trade-associations/ to ensure that the dispensaries you use are legitimate.

If you secretly (or even unknowingly) battle with anxiety or depression or know someone who does, please watch this interview and maybe even consider working with Pastor Holly in her 1:1 coaching or in her upcoming 4-Week group coaching program called “Live It Up,” which starts on Monday, July 11! She talks more about this program and gives very valuable insight in our interview today!

If you’re on the run, you can also listen to the audio download on SoundCloud HERE. (P.S. I apologize my microphone wasn’t working very well so there is a volume difference between me and Holly).

The minute markers and quotes are below you if you don’t have time for a listen!

Don’t Have Time To Watch The Video?

Here are the Highlights 😉

Holly’s background as a Pastor, Wife, Mom and Entrepreneur: 2:10

“I’ve actually been in ministry for over 20 years, then the Associate Pastor of my church for the last 7 years and the last year I have really gone into life coaching.”

“I know women with anxiety and depression are hiding. Others are open to seeking treatments from places like the old 27 dispensary.”

“I have an amazing husband, we just celebrated our 18-year anniversary.”

“He was divorced and had two kids……. the boys were 7 and 9 when we started dating and they are now 28 and 26. And then we have two boys together and they are 15 and almost 13”.

“I feel like the wellness, it all goes together, but it’s all about life.”

Question: What was it about anxiety and depression that spurred you to pursue helping women in this niche?

“I had trouble with anxiety and depression without really realizing it.” If you feel like you are suffering with depression/anxiety, be sure to speak to someone who may be able to give you advice. Additionally, you could buy weed online canada (if this is something you are willing to try) to help relieve the symptoms.

When my husband finally helped me admit it, and seek help, doctors first tried to encourage me to talk to people, but at first that was extremely difficult as it brought up too many emotions. The only thing that kept me going back then was Lexapro which was luckily really easy to access from places like: https://www.blinkhealth.com/lexapro meaning I was able to build up the courage to talk to someone about what was going in my head finally.

“My husband actually had a daughter and she was stillborn. As a woman I’m faith, I’m thinking, in my mind, ok – this happened for a reason.”

On Holly experiencing anxiety attacks after the loss of her daughter and not knowing what her triggers were: 3:40

“The God I serve is of joy.”

“I didn’t feel like as a woman of faith I should be experiencing those things.”

“All of a sudden, everything that I had been pushing down emotionally had manifested itself physically.”

“It was all manifesting itself in the form of panic attacks.”

“After so long, grief isn’t grief, it’s depression.”

“As a woman of faith or a believer, if I admit that I’m struggling with this, then I don’t have faith.”

On staying quiet about struggling with depression or anxiety: 8:25

“If I stay quiet about it, then I don’t need to hear everybody’s ‘well, you should do this, or you should try that.'”

“It’s much easier to just sit and battle it alone or just say ‘God, here, take this from me, but the difficult part is we’re human.”

“Just because we’re believers does not mean that we’re not going to feel feelings.”

On seeing the ROOT causes of the physical manifestations that anxiety and depression can cause: 11:00

“For me, it was a matter of denying the emotions I was feeling and suppressing everything.”

“In the end, it was all fear-based for me.”

Holly’s turning point in her Faith: 14:28

“I remember at one point going ‘okay, I’m saved, I know Jesus is my personal savior, if he were to take me home today, if I truly am sick and I’m having a heart attack, then I’m going home. So what’s there to be afraid of?’ So at that moment, that’s what made sense to me.”

On the TOOLS that Holly uses with her clients to help them find their TEMPERAMENT and their TRIGGERS: 15:06

“One of the classes that I took was called Creation Therapy and it was all about the temperaments….it goes over three different areas. It goes over your socialization, control, and affection and there are five different temperaments in the areas that I studied. To be able to identify what those temperaments were was a huge awareness……and that’s something I do with my clients when I coach them, is I give them this assessment.”

On how she helps people reconcile with God her temperament and circumstances: 19:38

“It’s going back to just knowing that we serve an all-sovereign God. He is so good and no matter what my circumstances look like, my faith tells me that I know that all things are going to work together for my good and for his glory.”

On ONE LIE that Holly believes we all believe: 26:30

“One lie that I do think that we believe is that God won’t give you anything more than you can handle. And you know what, God gives us sooo much more than we can handle because it’s not ours to handle, it’s his.”

On some of the other tools she uses to help clients with anxiety and /or depression: 27:50

“Changing your mindset on this ‘I’m missing out on everything, why wasn’t this given to me, I deserve that’, to appreciating everything that I have and that each day is a gift and changing that mindset to a mindset of gratitude.”

On how she has learned God wraps His greatest gifts to us: 29:45

“The gifts that God gives us in our lives, they don’t always come in a pretty box. Sometimes the gifts, you have to tear away the layers of the not so pretty. And when you’re able to tear away all those layers, you’re able to see the beauty within that really, what you thought was a curse is a blessing and a gift.”

On KNOWING God in order to BE who He has created us to be: 32:00

“He created you with a purpose. He created you with a plan and when God designed you, he didn’t design you with failure in mind…..so to be able to identify, ‘who did God create me to be?'”

On comparing ourselves to others: 33:30

“Then you can go, ‘here are my strengths. God, I’m giving you my strengths and I’m going to rock these strengths that you’ve given me and I’m going to do my best in that. And then here’s my weaknesses’. And what happens is that when we buy these lies that are weaknesses, that we’re supposed to be stronger in these areas – nobody’s perfect. So everybody has strengths, everybody has weaknesses, for me to think that I need to be strong in every area is foolish.”

On her 4 week “Live It Up” program starting July 11 (Deadline on July 10) 35:50

“This program talks about knowing who you are. When you know who you are and whose you are, you can do the work you were called to do…. it’s about identifying and knowing you are, identifying the good and the bad and finding out what your passions are and then pursuing it. and going ‘okay God, here I am.'”

“It’s a new program, I’m super excited about it. It’s a group program of women all going through this time of self-discovery together and sharing their journeys, so it’s going to be super cool.”

#FitFaithFriday with Coach Krista Kokot

My Interview with Krista Kokot

Fit & Faithful Krista

Me: Tell us a little bit more about what you do and how you came to start it?

Krista: Hi, I'm Krista Kokot, Krista Kokot Coaching, KristaKokot.com. I am a Life Adviser, enthusiast, dream chaser, fear facer, and lover of life. I have found a passion in giving people Permission to Quit all negative thoughts & actions that no longer serve them in the direction they want to in life.

I help people to face whatever fears that are blocking them from living their best lives that God created them for. I am passionate about people just like you, lean into discomfort, give strategic tools to walk through through those times of uncertainty knowing that the outcome will only make us stronger and wiser.

God has given us the ability to chose - and Fear will always be part of our lives, but with the help of people we surround ourselves with, our Faith in something much bigger than just ourselves, I help others just like myself come to point of embracing the discomfort and start growing into the best version of themselves possible.

what's your favorite traveldestination-

Me: How do you think your Fitness impacts your Faith and your Faith impacts your Fitness?

Krista: Fitness and my Faith in God have always been a part of my life since I was a young girl. I grew up in a Christian home and a very active home with sports being a big part of my life.

I started up my own fitness bootcamp 6 years ago, and through all those huge changes and struggles I came through, my God was always right there with me. God has given me this body to use as a vessel for His teachings here on earth, in whichever way that looks. I believe we need to keep our bodies healthy and happy through whatever fitness looks like for each of us. I spent too many years counting calories, and what the fat content was in each thing that went into my mouth and not enough time giving thanks to the Creator of my body that He made strong, healthy, happy and beautiful.  SO today, now at 42, I love my body image, I love teaching others that Fitness is a MUST, but what that looks like is very different for each and every one of us. Just like God created each of us unique and special on the inside, we are unique and special on the outside too.

MeWhat is the number one thing that you see women struggling with today?  How do you think Health/Fitness &/or Faith can help her in that struggle?

Krista: Women struggle with comparing themselves to false advertisements out there. I have found over years of continually struggling with my own happiness, and trying to find it in other people, food, fitness, things, money...nothing would satisfy my own happiness until I hit rock bottom and loved myself for who God created me to be, and nothing Less. Finding a healthy relationship with fitness and food was a game changer as well as loving the skin I was in, and relying on my Faith in God. That will be my number one thing that a lot of women struggle with today.

Me: What is the biggest lesson you've learned recently?

Krista: That I know nothing! 🙂 HA! No, not really, but as a 42 year old online Entrepreneur I have learned that every single day we can learn something pretty life changing if we allow ourselves to be open to hear. I have come to the realization that I have got A LOT of life left in me and this beautiful life goes by very fast so we much embrace and learn from each other.

Me: I am doing a series on "Fruitful Health" where we are talking about how to grow the fruits of the Spirit in your health.  We are talking JOY.  How do you find a way to ENJOY taking care of your health?

Krista: Figure out what works for you. Find exercises and food that work for you and your body. This can take trial and error, just because Cross-fit and tuna may work for your best friend does not mean it will work for you. Keep trying different things and keep them exciting, something that you LOVE to go and do. For example, myself - I love to mix it up. I enjoy swimming, biking, bootcamp, and LOVE LIFTING weights. So I mix my workouts up, I eat 80% of the time healthy good for me stuff (think GREEN) and then the other 20% of the time I enjoy my chocolate, Doritos and glass of red wine.

Once I figured out what worked for me... that gave me JOY!!

ME: Is there anything you have coming up that we can join you in?

Krista: JULY 3rd I launch a 4 week ONLINE program called SURVIVE to THRIVE. Helping others LEAN INTO FEAR. I will help you see what your fear is, acknowledge your fear, and start the process of getting through that fear that is keeping you stuck in the same spot for months or years on end.
Check it out here --->   http://bit.ly/1YpCL11

And every MON/WED/FRI, my husband and I go on Facebook LIVE and talk Couples Goodness! Struggles, Joys, Sadness, God's goodness, Parenting tips, Spouse tips, Love languages, and anything else that we feel this world needs to hear 🙂
Check us out... http://bit.ly/28OvZwC

Me: Tell us a little bit more about what you do and how you came to start it?

Candi: Hi my name is Candace Smith - you can also call me Candi, and I am a health coach, personal trainer, and fitness blogger. I am the owner of Beauty of Strength. Most recently, I decided to grow my personal brand in the online space by helping women break the diet mentality and lead a healthy, strong, sustainable lifestyle. I seek to help women be the best versions of themselves, not the smallest! I hope to help women un-complicate things around fat loss and body change. My hopes are to share and show women that they don't  have to go to extremes to lose weight, and that there are more important things in life than the number on a scale.

Me: How do you think your Fitness impacts your Faith and your Faith impacts your Fitness?

Candi: Fitness has made me stronger and fit in mind and body. Fitness is a gift from God and I am thankful for my health and strength physically, and mentally. I used to have really low self-esteem, primarily due to my body image. Relying on my faith and not what my body looks like, but what it can do, first and foremost, has had tremendous impact on me. Marveling in the body that God gave me. I used to try to force my body to something that it couldn't be. God has made us all uniquely different, and we as women seem to neglect that fact. In fact, you see it every day in the fitness and fashion industries –-women attempting to be what somebody else is, instead of being the best version of themselves and following their passions. Women shouldn’t compare themselves to other women – they aren’t competition, and doing this stifles rich, fulfilling relationships.

My faith in God keeps honesty and integrity at the forefront of my mind. I have no interest in selling or promoting quick fixes, gimmicks, and short term weight loss that will only drive women further into frustration and depression when it all goes wrong. I always strive to promote fitness methods and mentalities that I believe in one hundred percent!

MeWhat is the number one thing that you see women struggling with today?  How do you think Health/Fitness &/or Faith can help her in that struggle?

Candi: I see women struggling with body image - how they see and view themselves. I believe first and foremost, knowing or finding who you are in Christ will help.  Our value doesn’t lie in our body shape or size - we are mothers, sisters, friends, and aunts, and we are loved and valued just the way we are.

Also, knowing that your self-worth has nothing to do with a scale number, a dress size, nor 6 pack abs. Remember, God loves you unconditionally, and unfortunately, many women try to find value outside that unconditional love.

If you can love yourself and grant yourself some compassion first and foremost, you can achieve your body transformation much easier.

I also think lifting weights and getting stronger makes a huge impact on body image struggles. Strength training not only builds strength, but also confidence. You start to walk differently, and I think you even start to think differently. Falling in love with the weight helps you fall in love yourself. You'll have a new swag about yourself!

Me: What is the biggest lesson you've learned recently?

Candi: Patience and trust in the Lord with building my online based fitness business – I can’t do it all by myself.

It’s been a process and it can be difficult to see the light at the end of the tunnel. This year, as I build my business, I know that I have to rely on my Faith to get me through the struggles, and be patient with the process, just like with anything else in life.  I have also opened myself up to ask for help or advice from a group of amazing strong women in a business mentorship group I’m in.

ME: We are in the middle of a blog series on living with FRUITFUL Health and walking through how to live the 9 Fruits of the Spirit in our health.  We are on to JOY! What tips can you give people who don't necessarily love working out or eating well to find JOY in this process of health?

Candi: I think we rush into fitness too fast, and want all the change right now. Instant gratification, ya know? I think if we step back and evaluate the process, look at things objectively and take the journey one step at time. No rushing, no quick fixes, or extremes because that causes burnout and frustration.

You’ll fall in love with working out and eating well if you like how you are doing it! If you like how you eat and how you move. Find what you enjoy – there are many ways to reach your fitness goals! What may work for one, may not work for another, so keep trying out new things until you find what you enjoy. The joy or love of working out and eating well is an enjoyable process when it resonates with YOU. This can be my preferred method, strength training, or it can be anything that gets you moving –walking, running, yoga, group fitness, hiking, etc. Don’t fall into the cookie cutter “it has to be this way or nothing” mentality.

ME: Is there anything you have coming up that we can join you in?

Candi: Stay tuned for 30 days of fat loss the healthy way.  I will be posting a video blog daily with tips and tools to help my community navigate nutrition and fitness the sustainable way.  Don't miss my daily blogs by joining me over on my Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/thebeautyofstrength/

#FitFaithFriday My Interview with former Helicopter Pilot and West Point Health Instructor

Fit Faith Friday with Laura McKenna

#FitFaithFriday: [Video Interview] Laura McKenna

God is so good.  This week I actually had planned another teaching and was preparing to do that video, but when I decided to take the opportunity to volunteer with a new church I've been enjoying here in the Silicon Valley (C3 Church), I met this gorgeous and AMAZING mom, Laura McKenna.   What can I say, God always seems to just KNOW.

Laura is IMMEDIATELY someone that shines her light upon you and you feel the warmth of her love and energy.  She and I met while washing some walls of this house for Habitat for Humanity and 30 seconds in we both discovered that we both were health coaches that now love CrossFit!

Getting to hear her background of her Army upbringing, education and employment as West Point is all astonishing enough...but then to hear her heart on why she now feels called to help others with their Health & Wellness is simply beautiful.

I'm really excited that I was able to do this quick interview with her (we kinda took a break from our volunteering!) and the fact that it was in person for once, which means I might actually get to hang out with this girl again, just gives me such joy.

I hope you enjoy her interview!  She's simply AWESOME!

P.S. she was a little sad she didn't have makeup and looked "nice"...but all I can stare at is her ripped arms and beautiful smile?!  How about you?! 😉

Don't Have Time To Watch The Video?

Here are the Highlights 😉

Introduction to Laura McKenna

LM: So i’m an Army brat, who then went to West Point, graduated, commissioned and then was a military police officer. Then [I] branch transferred to aviation, flew helicopters for a bit. Then just some blessings and blessings and the Army sent me to grad school. [I] got my master’s degree in Physical Education, Kinesiology, Performance Nutrition, Biomechanics all that cool stuff. Teaching and coaching, I got to teach at the Military Academy at West Point for four years. Then when I got out of the Army, just discerning my calling. Asking God how I can be of the most use? How can He put me to use for His mission, is how I ended up as a health coach. I really want to help people be fit and well. Because the more full you are as a person the fitter you are, the more you have to give others. I really want to help people get there in their own lives.

Laura McKenna 2

How Does Faith Impact Your Fitness & Vice Versa?

LM: Fitness has always been an aspect of my life (2:15) Both are important foundations for your life. But the way that they impact each other is, my faith helps me to have that control and discipline. (2:35) My fitness has impacted my faith because it empowers me and gives me a greater capability to serve others. Service requires stamina, it requires the physical ability and the mental ability and you get all of those benefits from being physically fit.

“Strength is for Service not for Status” Romans 15:1

On the #1 Struggle She See's Women Face:

LM: The biggest thing that I see with women is that they don’t think that they deserve it and that stems from 1.) The belief that “I am not enough” which is FALSE. And 2.) the belief that it is selfish… I struggled with this too.

(4:24) [My friend], Molly Wright, shared this with me years ago and I have just so taken it to heart.

In an airplane, if the cabin loses pressure, why do you apply your own oxygen mask first? Well because if you pass out you cannot help anybody else. You’re not in a position to help others so it has really helped me shift my focus to if I am able, if i’m taking care of myself first, from that abundance that I feel, from that health, I’m going to help others… It’s actually the foundation for selflessness… You are enough, you are beautifully and wonderfully made.

Laura McKenna 1

Fruits of the Spirit:  On How She Finds JOY In Her Health:

(6:26) Two things there, one is the feeling of accomplishment that you have when you complete a tough workout.

I had a PR during my deadlift yesterday and i’m stoked. That’s JOY… it’s an accomplishment, and I’m proud of and excited about it. The other part is tapping into a community, I’m a Crossfit athlete, I love the community of Crossfit. Getting out of the Army I really miss the shared suffering of working out this other people… everyone is just encouraging each other, supporting each other, and building each other up.

{FitFaithFriday} Battling Orthorexia with Silivia Martinez

Fit Faith Friday with Silvia Martinez

Fit & Faithful Caroline

#FitFaithFriday: [Video Interview] Overcoming Orthorexia & a Failed Marriage with God

What a true privilege it was to be able to do a video interview this week with my Fit & Faithful friend, Silvia Martinez!

Silvia was brave enough to share her testimony with us for the FIRST TIME of her painful experience battling years of ORTHOREXIA which led her to a divorce and ultimately a wake-up call.

It's a really important message for us all to hear, not only because I think it's becoming a common psychological disorder with the growing competitive fitness industry, but more importantly, her testimony shares just how strong and might God is!

He has turned her "mess into a message" as she says and is bravely making friends with food again!  Her story will inspire you as it did me!

You can also catch the AUDIO download of this video on SoundCloud for on the go listening!  Here's the LINK TO THAT

Don't Have Time To Watch The Video?

Here are the Highlights 😉

Silvia's health credentials (2:17)

I am a certified personal trainer along with a fitness and nutrition specialization and also weight loss. I am almost done with hormone specialist certification.  That certification led from a disorder of orthorexia, which messed up my metabolism.

Struggling with her body image (3:20)

Growing up I did have a lot of self esteem issues. I'm Hispanic and our hips and behinds tend to be a bit bigger.

I think the struggle comes when we are trying to compare and trying be someone else. And we get away from God's purpose in our life.

This is how I was when I was growing up and I ended up bringing it into my marriage. I was trying to be self-ambitious in my body. I tried to do
bikini and figure competitions but I never got to do them because of fear.

I started falling apart. I distanced myself away from my parents, my close friends and even my husband.

Orthorexia explained (5:47)

Orthorexia is an extreme disorder on food safety. I got traumatized of all the chemical and things that food had. And of course the fitness industry
markets to that and tells you you have to eat this and that to get six-pack abs. Even in celebrations and out to eat, I would bring my own food. I was afraid to eat in public places because I was afraid I was going to get fat or there was something that was going to contaminate with my body.

And then I had an obsession exercise if I did eat something. Even if I was sick in bed I would still have to workout because I felt so guilty that I ate a bad meal, or what I thought in my mind was a bad meal.

It was a gift that I loved to study all that (food). That is where the enemy tries to steal from us the peace that we are to have from Jesus Christ. Our fixation needs to be on God and not on our body and making idols out of ourselves.

Her lowest point . . . (8:00)

My divorce was rock bottom for me. My husband didn't recognize the person I was anymore.

It was hard, but (now) I thank God for that experience because it has let God make the woman that HE has wanted me to become. It's now a testimony.

Turning it all around (9:00)

More than anything I have become friends with food. Food is not the enemy, it is US that makes it an enemy. It's ok now if I eat a cake, or eat Barbecue with greasiness. But more than anything, it's about being at PEACE in my heart. More than anything it's about SURRENDERING to God.

Silvia_M._Quote (2)

How fitness impacts her Faith....(14:20)

One of the things I do see in women is our identity issues. Sometimes we feel like we need to be "better" to look like "so and so" and we need to look a certain way to be acceptable.

But with Faith, you realize that our INNER health is more important. I call it becoming "Spiritually Fit" so we can portray the radiance and the light of a healthy body.

On how Faith impacts her Fitness (16:40)

As my identity is more rooted in Jesus Christ I see my fitness as just a beautiful GIFT. Many people don't have that ability to walk, run, to see the sun, and to breathe. It's amazing what our bodies can do and what God has given us. He gives us this ability and we need to use it with gratitude.

Growing more JOY in her health (17:50)

I use the acronym J.O.Y:

Jesus-Others-You
This is the order in which we can experience the most JOY in life. I make my fitness more as an act of service.Silvia_M._Family (2)

Women's #1 struggle (20:40)

It is the identity that we question. We are beautiful no matter what. We don't need to compare ourselves to others. Instead of pulling each other down we should be pushing each other up! If you're good at cooking, then hey, come and join me! I can give you the nutrition if you can show me how to cook!

We all have different gifts!

Lessons learned (24:30)

Learning to love people for who they are. They are who He created them to be. I myself can't change them. He's been teaching me it's not always my way. People are not always going to be perfect just like I'm not perfect. And just like Jesus accepts us and loves us, we also need to accept others and love others.

Rooting Out 3 Most Common Fear-Based Eating Habits

Free Yourself From These Top 3 Fear-Based Eating Tendencies

Fit & Faithful 3 Fear Teaching

#FitFaithFriday: [Video Teaching] How to Overcome Fear In Our Eating

This week I unpack God's word to help us overcome the top 3 fear-based eating tendencies most common among women today.

Using 2 Timothy 1:7 I encourage you to dive into your SPIRITUAL nature to in habituating and choosing your foods rather than our human, fleshy, and fear-based nature.

2 Timothy 1:7 says:

It says, "For the Spirit God gave us does not make us timid, but gives us power, love and self-discipline."

Recognizing how fear is impacting our eating is the first step toward changing it to being empowered by God and our Spiritual nature.

Don't Have Time To Watch The Video?

Here are the Highlights 😉

1:35 Unpacking 2 Timothy 1:7 NIV and AMP
3:20 Talking Spiritual Nature vs Fleshy Nature

7:45 #1 Fear-Based Habit is:  Waiting for the "Right Time" to start your better eating habits.

The #truth is that you have the "power, love, and self-discipline" to take the NEXT BEST STEP from where you are right now.  You don't have to do everything 'just right' and use that as a delay tactic, you don't have to fear the negative feelings from deprivation because you can still enjoy the foods you love, you can do what you can with where you are NOW.

You can get the Next Best Step Action Plan FREE PDF right ---> Here

13:38 #2 Fear-Based Habit is: Exercising "Controlling" Eating Habits (i.e. being 'on plan') with Fear instead of Love.

This one is tricky because a lot of people will think they are being "self-controlled" with their eating plans and rules but the reality is that their plan is controlling them!  It's affecting their mood, their self-talk, and causes more feelings of guilt and condemnation when things go wrong.

You can determine if you are in a Spiritual form of self-control by the "FRUITS" that this choice is showing.  Jesus said, "You know a tree by it's fruit" so if this IS the will of God, it will allow you to be more loving, joyful, peaceful, patient, kind, gentle etc.

If it's NOT, then you know you are rooting yourself in FEAR BASED CONTROL and you might need to change up the "plan" approach.  One way is to use a GUIDE, like my Nutrient Based Eating guide that doesn't include the RULES and micromanaging.

18:29 #3 Fear-Based Eating Habit is:  Social Pressures of Eating

Whether it's the "fear of missing out," a scarcity mentality, or just eating what everyone else is eating so you don't make them or you  "feel uncomfortable"  all of these fear based tendencies invoke the greatest temptation to eat more than we need or to eat or drink things that don't serve our health goals.

You need more of your Spiritual "POWER, LOVE, and SELF-DISCIPLINE" to be the change you wish to see in the world and to be a shining example to those around you of what health can look like.

It should be joyful, peaceful and confident choices for you to resist the temptation of what everyone else is eating.

{#FitFaithFriday} Fit For His Glory with Caroline Foster

My Interview with Caroline Foster

I just love how technology brings new people into our life!  It's such a unique opportunity to connect and spread the message and the MOVEMENT!   I 'met' Caroline on Instagram as we have featured her on our Fit.Faith.Movement account (which I hope you follow!) as she has consistently posted some really amazing and inspirational stuff!

I hope you love what she has to say in her answer below!  This woman is on FIRE for God and I especially love her idea of "Thankful Thursday!"

I hope you enjoy Caroline's answers as much as I did!  Follow her!  You'll be blessed!

Me: Tell us a little bit more about what you do and how you came to start it?

Caroline: My walk with the Lord is the cornerstone of my ENTIRE life. Every aspect of Fit for His Glory is centered on Proverbs 16:3, "Commit to the LORD whatever you do, and he will establish your plans." Two years ago God really began to stir in my heart, convicting me about my motives behind working out and eating healthy.

It was during this time that the Lord used an online challenge group with my dear friend Michelle Myers to realign my focus in fitness on Christ. For the FIRST time in my life being fit was not just about being skinny, but about being healthy so I was equipped to serve God better! The confidence I received from this new perspective and the realization that other women share in these same struggles led to the development of Fit for His Glory.

My goal with Fit for His Glory is to serve women in health and fitness and help them live healthy/happy lives for the glory of God! In July 2014, I teamed up with Beachbody to offer fitness and nutritional solutions for women who, much like me, are looking for a way to reach their fitness goals while being true to other responsibilities. One day I hope to be a stay at home mom, while coaching and leading thousands of women just like her.

Me: How do you think your Fitness impacts your Faith and your Faith impacts your Fitness?

Caroline: But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me. For when I am weak, then I am strong." -2 Corinthians 12:9-10
Though battling cravings and getting healthy can be hard, it is a chance to see Jesus Christ’s power working in us through our weaknesses.
That's my prayer! That through my health and fitness journey, people would see Jesus! One of my friends once said that if the church would get health and marriage right, people would be flooding our church buildings.  It's SO true! This is an area of opportunity sisters! A place where we can shine the light of Jesus and show the world how the Lord is using our struggles to make us more like Him!

MeWhat is the number one thing that you see women struggling with today?  How do you think Health/Fitness &/or Faith can help her in that struggle?

Caroline: Comparison and competition among women has many women trapped! We look at social media and think everyone has it all together. I love the quote by Theodore Roosevelt, "Comparison is the thief of joy!" If someone were trying to break into your home or car, wouldn't you try to prevent it from happening? The same is true when we fall into the comparison trap! The thief is out to steal our joy and focus, and that's why we need to put boundaries in place that keep our focus on God's goodness.

"Comparison is the thief of joy!" -Theodore Roosevelt

Jealousy comes from counting others' blessings instead of our own. Instead of falling into the comparison trap, we need to focus on how GOOD God has and will be in our lives! I found it helpful to make a "Thankful Thursday" list every week. This helps me realign my focus on the goodness of the Lord. He is the great provider, but when we focus on the negative we can EASILY loose focus of the good!

Me: What is the biggest lesson you've learned recently?

Caroline: First off let me just say that wanting to take care of us is definitely NOT bad! I personally love to work out, dress cute, wear makeup and curl my hair. It makes me feel good and I am sure my husband likes to see me looking my best. 😉 The problem is when it consumes our thoughts and becomes our main focus.

"Our number one priority as women of God should be seeking God with a fully surrendered heart! Then and only then will we be able to love and serve others well."

I love Psalm 31:30, "Charm is deceptive, and beauty is fleeting; but a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised."
It's not always easy, but it comes at a high reward! Our hearts and lives will be much richer and fulfilled when our focus and purpose are on being a light rather then just being pretty.

Me: What dreams do you have for this year and for the future?  What role do you expect God to play in developing these into realities?

Caroline: We have a lot happening in our lives in 2016 and we are SO SO thankful! I am currently pregnant with our first baby and due in November 2016. I am excited to take on this new challenge as a mom. My goal over the next few months is to really grow my business, in hopes to make it full time after baby Foster comes. If that doesn't happen, it's okay. I know that God is the great provider, but I am working hard to make that dream a reality.

ME: I am just starting a blog series on living with FRUITFUL Health and walking through how to live the 9 Fruits of the Spirit in our health.  We are starting off with LOVE of course!  Can you tell us how it is that you have found a way to LOVE taking care of your health?  How do you know it's REAL love?

Caroline: I find JOY in serving other women through health and fitness! It seriously makes my heart so so happy! I guess personally though, I find joy in living an active lifestyle and being outside. Working out and eating healthy give me so much energy and allow me to do things that I really really love! Being outside and living an active life allows me to feel so close to God. It's in those moments that gratitude fills my heart!

ME: Is there anything you have coming up that we can join you in?

Caroline: “Be YOU Bootcamp” starting May 2nd! Together with my sweet friend@FreedomGraceNFitness, we will be leading a 30 day group where we will be committing to our exercise, nutrition and running the race God has called us to! Freedom in Christ means being free to be ourselves and living the life Christ has called us to, in body, mind and soul!

I love 2 Corinthians 5:17 "Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!” Sister- if you are in Christ Jesus YOU ARE HIS! We will be digging deep into this in our group. It’s going to be good!
